Ideally, your brand should embody the best (and most essential) attributes of your company. That’s pretty unlikely to occur if you leave your branding to chance. Your brand name is just that - the name of your company or business. The logo is a graphical representation of that brand. Sometimes, the logo is just letters, like the logo for crowdspring you see above.

You will always know up front exactly what you'll pay, with no hidden costs and no surprises. At La Logo Designs, we are your one-stop solution to creative and unique logos that represent your brand identity. Get your logos designed by us and enjoy a 100% unique logo tailored to your exact business needs.

The Nike swoosh is a symbol, as is the apple in the Apple logo. But for both companies, you'll often see the name reflected in a graphical format where the letters are using a very specific font. Sometimes you'll see the name by itself, while at other times you'll see the name together with the symbol, or just the symbol. This is true for your company whether you’ve made a single conscious branding decision or not. And that’s why it’s vitally important to make conscious, consistent branding choices. The decisions left unmade, and a brand left untended may hurt your business.

The logo was also used to create some new products for Los Angeles creatives. Phone cases, water bottles, skateboards, and candles are just a few of the new product types being sold with the logo. This was a cool way to pay homage to the city’s bustling creative center and draw attention to aspiring startups and businesses. Today, there are a lot of mediums and sizes and our logos have to perform well across all mediums. Therefore it’s important to consider where and how your logo will be displayed so that you can specify colors and file formats.

How I Create the Best Brand Designs for Clients

On average, logo design companies in LA charge $170–$250 per hour. While some companies opt to use a free logo design generator, companies that want to invest in their brand image may value the quality that a logo design agency can provide. Businesses looking to create a high-quality logo but don’t need additional branding can expect to pay between $800–$2,500. Whoever, avail them mentions they feel the difference but this feeling is limited to my immediate customers. La Logo Designs team helped me to convey my USPs to the right audience by exact targeting.

It all starts with a LA logo

Here are two of our favorite Los Angeles logo designs from the city. These designs highlight some of LA’s strengths and give viewers an idea of what Los Angeles really stands for. As we wrote above, you always want a vectorized version of your logo so that you can properly size it for small business cards or large billboards. That's why software like Adobe Photoshop are not proper tools for designing logos. The secret is to uncover that deeper or hidden meaning before designing the logo.

The Biology, Structure, and Function of Hair

hair anatomy

The color of your hair follicle doesn’t relate to the color of your hair. Telogen effluvium is when hair roots are pushed into the telogen resting phase. This usually occurs after some stress and can be acute or chronic. Hair has many areas of clinical significance, which include diseases of hair loss, excess, alterations due to nutritional deficiencies, infectious causes, and effects of drug reactions.

1. Hair growth cycle

Moreover the follicular papilla is an essential source of growth factors [1, 3, 16, 28]. The main component of the cortex is a keratin coiled-coil protein phase. The proteins form intermediate filaments, which then organize into larger and larger fibres. The common features observed in the X-ray data of all specimens are signals related to the coiled-coil keratin phase and the formation of intermediate filaments in the cortex, and the cell membrane complex. Signal assignment and corresponding length scales are shown in the figure.

Scalp histology

An abnormal signal was previously reported by James et al. (1999) in hair samples of patients with breast cancer. Such an approach is quite intriguing, as scanning of hair samples could be used as easy, inexpensive and non-invasive screening techniques in the diagnosis of cancer. James et al. (1999) observed a ring-like signal at 44.4 Å, at the position of the lamellar plasma membrane signal, and assigned this signal to the presence of breast cancer. The analysis and assignment was questioned later on by Briki et al. (1999) and Howell et al. (2000), who observed this feature in healthy and cancer patients in equal measure. The ring-like 45 Å signal is also present in the data for all individuals included in our study, such that a relation to breast cancer can most likely be excluded.

Dr. Herman selects Robbins for a fetal surgery fellowship and becomes her mentor. Differences in the X-ray data between individuals were observed in the wide angle region (WAXS) of the 2-dimensional data in Fig. Figure 7A shows a comparison between individual 3 and 4 to illustrate the effect. For an easy comparison, the original data were cut in half and recombined, such that the left half depicts individual 3, and the right half individual 4. The keratin proteins in the cortex are known to organize in bundles whose structures are dominated by α-helical coiled-coils (Pauling & Corey, 1950; Pinto et al., 2014; Yang et al., 2014).

Tightly coiled hair in its natural state may be worn in an Afro. This hairstyle was once worn among African Americans as a symbol of racial pride. African Americans as a whole have a variety of hair textures, as they are not an ethnically homogeneous group, but an ad-hoc of different racial admixtures. The eyebrows provide moderate protection to the eyes from dirt, sweat and rain. They also play a key role in non-verbal communication by displaying emotions such as sadness, anger, surprise and excitement.

Eumelanin is the dominant pigment in brown hair and black hair, while pheomelanin is dominant in red hair. Blond hair is the result of having little pigmentation in the hair strand. Above the dermal papilla is the hair matrix which consists of proliferating keratinocytes. These cells proliferate and gradually move upwards where they are keratinized to produce the hair shaft. The hair bulb comprises the expanded portion of the inferior hair follicle and contains the dermal papilla and hair matrix. It’s in the shape of a cylinder with a rounded bottom in your skin.

Hair loss can refer to increased daily hair loss, which a clinician will elicit by asking if the patient notices more hair on his or her pillow or more hair in the shower after bathing. Hair loss can also refer to apparent hairlessness, which a clinician will elicit by asking if the patient notices areas without hair or regions where hair seems to be less thick or provide less coverage. Teasing out this distinction is necessary to determine the correct diagnosis. The loose areolar tissue forms a loose connection between the epicranial aponeurosis and the pericranium.

Glossy (vitreous) layer

Lineage studies have proven that bulge cells are multipotent and that their progeny generate the new lower anagen hair follicle [21]. One of the most distinguishing features of stem cells is their slow-cycling nature, presumably to conserve their proliferative potential and to minimize DNA errors that could occur during replication. On entering the hair bulb matrix, they proliferate and undergo terminal differentiation to form the hair shaft and inner root sheath. They also migrate distally to form sebaceous glands and to proliferate in response to wounding [16, 20, 22]. They are tubular and are formed from multiple layers of epithelial cells.

Microanatomy of Catagen Phase Hair

hair anatomy

The hairs of the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes are of separate types from these others and develop fairly early in life. On the scalp, where hair is usually densest and longest, the average total number of hairs is between 100,000 and 150,000. Human hair grows at a rate of about 0.5 inch (13 mm) per month.

hair anatomy

The upper layers of the scalp can slide over the connective tissue beneath them, which is why the skin on your head has some ‘movement’. The suprabulb region extends from the hair bulb to the isthmus and consists of components of the hair shaft, IRS, ORS, vitreous layer, and fibrous root sheath. Although vellus hairs greatly outnumber terminal hairs, the latter are more important. Therefore, the discussion of hair anatomy in this article focuses on terminal hairs.

The follicle remains in this stage until the hair germ which is responsive to anagen initiating signals from the dermal papilla, starts to show enhanced proliferative and transcriptional activity in late telogen, leading to the initiation of anagen [2, 39]. Several molecular pathways, growth factors, proteins and genes play substantial roles for the development of the hair follicle. Canonical (β-catenin dependent) WNT (wingless-type integration site) signals are candidates for the initial dermal message, and it is believed that they precede other activators and regulators of appendage development.

While the two specimens both show the general features, differences are observed in the region of signal from the cell membrane complex. (B) Comparison between individuals 1 and 2, father and daughter. The data in (C) (individuals 9 and 12) are from identical twins. Data in (D) was taken from fraternal twins (individuals 10 and 11). While different individuals in general show different membrane patterns (A), features in (B) and (C) perfectly agree. Fraternal twins show slight differences in their pattern in (D).

Enhanced knowledge on the normal dynamics of the hair provides understanding the basis of how the follicle behaves during a disease. However recent progress in our understanding of the biology and pathology of hair follicles should lead more effective therapies for hair disorders. Medulla is located in the center of the hair shaft preferably presented in coarser fibers. The hair medulla contains structural proteins that are markedly different from other hair keratins and eosinophilic granules that are filled by an amino acid, citrulline and eventually form internal coatings within the membranes of mature cells [14, 16, 17].

Hair Follicle: Function, Structure & Associated Conditions

hair anatomy

In summary, the formation of placodes in response to the first dermal signal involves activation of EDA/EDAR signaling in the epithelium, followed by epithelial WNT signaling, and subsequent activation of BMP signaling. The actions of EDA/EDAR and WNT promote placode formation, whereas BMP signaling represses placode fate in adjacent skin [6]. Our team is growing all the time, so we’re always on the lookout for smart people who want to help us reshape the world of scientific publishing. When taking history in a patient with hair loss, it is imperative to determine what the patient is experiencing.

Activation of this β-catenin pathway seems to be essential for the epithelial ability of the hair follicle production [7]. In utero, type and distribution of each hair follicle over the entire body are determined. The genes that are expressed before the signs of hair follicle formation constitute the precise spacing and distribution of the follicles.

Outer root sheath

hair anatomy

The hair shaft is the part of the hair not anchored to the follicle, and much of this is exposed at the skin’s surface. The rest of the hair, which is anchored in the follicle, lies below the surface of the skin and is referred to as the hair root. The hair root ends deep in the dermis at the hair bulb, and includes a layer of mitotically active basal cells called the hair matrix. The hair bulb surrounds the hair papilla, which is made of connective tissue and contains blood capillaries and nerve endings from the dermis (Figure 1). Hair follicle melanocytes and their precursors reside in the hair matrix and along the outer root sheath of anagen hair follicles. However, production of hair pigment (black eumelanin and/or the reddish pheomelanin) only occurs in the specialized hair follicle pigmentary unit, located above and around the dermal papilla during anagen III–VI.

Do hair follicles heal after an injury and will my hair grow back?

They eventually shed by about 36 to 40 weeks gestation and are replaced by vellus hairs that cover most areas of the body. Meanwhile, thicker, courser terminal hairs can be found on the head in certain areas such as the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Beard hairs will arise once puberty is reached, with androgen hormones transforming the vellus hairs in this area into terminal hairs.

4, these signals were observed in the X-ray data in all specimen and assigned to the coiled-coil protein phase. We note that these peaks are related to generic α-helical coil structures of monomeric proteins, and not specific to a certain type of protein. The hair strands were oriented in the X-ray diffractometer with their long axis along qz. Two-dimensional X-ray data were measured for each specimen covering distances from about 3–90 Å including signals from the coiled-coil α-keratin phase, the intermediate fibrils in the cortex and from the cell membrane complex. The 2-dimensional data were integrated and converted into line scans and fit for a quantitative analysis. There is less interest for the mechanism of the hair shedding but from the patient’s perspective it is probably the most important part of the hair growth.

Structure of Hair

The series premiered on March 27, 2005, on ABC as a mid-season replacement. 7B between father and daughter also enables the study of the effect of hair care products, such as shampoo and conditioner on the molecular structure of hair. While Subject 2 (father) uses soap and shower gel to clean scalp and hair, Subject 1 (daughter) regularly uses shampoo and conditioner. The identical X-ray signals indicate that these products do not have an effect on the molecular structure of keratin and membranes deep inside the hair (within the resolution of our experiment). The first sign of catagen is the termination of melanogenesis in the hair bulb. Follicular epithelium, mesenchyme, neuroectodermal cell populations and also perifollicular vascular and neural systems demonstrates cyclic changes in differentiation and apoptosis.

These cortical cells were found to be approximately 1–6 µm in diameter and 50–100 µm in length (Randebrook, 1964). In wool fibres as well as human hair, the cortical cells were observed to be divided into different regions termed orthocortex, paracortex and mesocortex (Mercer, 1953). The difference in distribution of these cell types is an important factor for determining the curvature of the hair fibre (Kajiura et al., 2006).

Hair bulb

Insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), fibroblast growth factor-7 hepatic growth factor (HGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are thought to be important for anagen maintenance [36]. Ectodysplasin (EDA) and its receptor (EDAR) are another important pathways involved in the placode stage of hair morphogenesis. The mouse EDAR mRNA is expressed in the epithelium before placode formation, and then becomes restricted to placodes, whereas the EDA mRNA is still expressed even after placode formation [3, 6, 8].

But because new hairs are always growing and replacing them, this natural hair loss isn't noticeable. The color of the hair is determined by the amount of melanin in the hardened cells. This can vary a lot from person to person, and it changes over the course of a lifetime. The amount of melanin typically decreases as people get older, and more air gets trapped inside the hair – it then loses its color and turns white. Depending on someone’s original hair color and the number of white hairs that grow, the hair on their head then turns gray or white.

The shape and structure of these layers are, in turn, determined by the shape of the hair follicle. Hair growth begins with the production of keratinocytes by the basal cells of the hair bulb. As new cells are deposited at the hair bulb, the hair shaft is pushed through the follicle toward the surface.

This is not involved in the formation of hair and is separated from surrounding connective tissue by the glassy membrane, a form of specialised basement membrane. The layers keratinize by forming trichohyalin granules; this is unlike the hair shaft, which undergoes trichilemmal keratinization. The outermost layer of the IRS (Henle layer) keratinizes first because it is lowest in the hair follicle. The cells of the innermost layer (IRS cuticle) point downward and inward and interconnect with the cells of the hair cuticle. These 2 cuticles are completely integrated and keratinize after the Henle layer. The middle layer (Huxley layer) keratinizes after the IRS cuticle and the hair cuticle.

The details of these elements and further information regarding the epidermis can be found here. In fact, although genetic findings (Tishkoff, 2009) suggest that sub-Saharan Africans are the most genetically diverse continental group on Earth, Afro-textured hair approaches ubiquity in this region. This points to a strong, long-term selective pressure that, in stark contrast to most other regions of the genomes of sub-Saharan groups, left little room for genetic variation at the determining loci. Such a pattern, again, does not seem to support human sexual aesthetics as being the sole or primary cause of this distribution. Thin strands that sometimes are almost translucent when held up to the light.

Hair shaft pigmentation ensures multiple benefits including UV protection, thermoregulation and sexual perceptions. Furthermore, the hair pigment, melanin, is a potent free-radical scavenger. Melanin production inside the active anagen hair bulb may, therefore, help to buffer cell stress induced by reactive oxygen species. Melanin can be black, brown, or yellow, and varying combinations and quantities of each type gives us each our own unique hair color. The infundibulum is the upper portion of the hair follicle, above the entry of the sebaceous duct. Because of the abundance of AMPs, the dermal papilla stains positively with Alcian blue and metachromatically with toluidine blue.

The outer root sheath (ORS) covers the IRS as it extends upward from the matrix cells at the lower end of the hair bulb to the entrance of the sebaceous gland duct. The ORS is thinnest at the level of the bulb and thickest in the middle portion of the hair follicle. The ORS cells contain clear, vacuolated cytoplasm because of the presence of large amounts of glycogen. In darkly pigmented individuals, melanin can be found in abundance within the melanophages of the dermal papilla. The hair matrix is the actively growing portion of the follicle consisting of a collection of epidermal cells that rapidly divide, move upward, and give rise to the hair shaft and the internal root sheath. The typical mammalian hair consists of the shaft, protruding above the skin, and the root, which is sunk in a pit (follicle) beneath the skin surface.

Medullary cells contain glycogen-rich vacuoles and medullary granules, which contain citrulline (similar to the cells of the IRS). In the time of Confucius (5th century BCE), the Chinese grew out their hair and often tied it, as a symbol of filial piety. Regular hairdressing in some cultures is considered a sign of wealth or status.

Advanced Compiler Design UCSD CSE231

cse231 - advanced compiler design

It turns outthat these concepts are quite interesting and provide a useful introductionto more sophisticated uses of functions, so we will discuss them here. This was completely sufficient infrastructure for implementing objectconstruction and field access. We left the (I claim trivial) additions offield update and initialization as exercises to the reader. Founded in 1930 and located in Pasadena, California, ArtCenter College of Design is a global leader in art and design education. With a current enrollment of approximately 2,423 students (57% female and 43% male, representing more than 50 countries), the College has a student/faculty ratio of 8 to 1. A key consequence of dynamic dispatch is that object values must containinformation about their class, because the class of an object cannot bedetermined statically.

Ability to implement a parser such as a bottom-up SLR parser without using Yacc/Bison or any other compiler-generation tools. In the case of no inheritance, where we have our decorated AST, let’sconsider the c.inc() expressions in this program.

Functions as Values (in WASM, Function References and Tables)

Here we have a classic case in compiler design – for different kinds ofcomplexity in a program, we can use different compilation techniques tocompile the “same” programming language feature (in this case nestedfunctions). Another view is that adding references around variables alwaysworks as a fully general solution, but if the variable is never updated it’ssafe to remove the references as an optimization, and if the function issufficiently small, we could inline instead. All three of these strategies—inlining, adding extra arguments, and creatingreferences for variables variables—are useful. Inlining can actually reducethe number of instructions run by a program. Adding extra arguments causesmore work (extra pushing of arguments) in exchange for working on recursivefunctions and functions that might be too costly to inline.

cse231 - advanced compiler design

This gives us some constraints that allow usmore freedom with compilation than we have with other functions. Inparticular, we know g cannot be exported and called from another REPLentry, so if we wanted to, say, change its signature to add or removearguments, we could also find all of the places that call g and update themappropriately. And in fact, Python with nonlocal declarations is closer to theinteresting-case behavior of most programming languages – multiple functionscan perform updates on, and see the value of, a shared variable. Advanced material in programming languages and translator systems. Adding inheritance now means that we need to track the table layout of theclass environment across REPL entries as well, and each new REPL module needsaccess to a running table of function references.

This project will allow us to explore a number of interesting features ofcompilation and build deployable, user-facing programming environments. The main course project is building an in-browser, interactive compiler from(typed) Python programs to WebAssembly.

Since WASM doesn’t permit access to the stackoutside of the current function, such a cross-call variable reference isprohibited. We need another strategy to implement nested functions atop WASM.Our approach to this could be multi-faceted, depending on the particularconstraints of g and f. These techniques may come in handy, no matter what field of CS you end up working in. For nested functions with ChocoPy’s restrictions (we’ll revisit thisrestriction later), we know that all calls to g must occur within the bodyof f. Generally, all calls to a nested function appear within the body ofthe function it is declared in.

Aside from modifying theREPL/runner to consume and produce this new information there’s no newinfrastructure required. The WASM tool is tables and the call_indirectinstruction,which allow us to refer to a function by a numeric (i32) index into a tablerather than by a name that needs to be known at compile-time. WASM currentlysupports a single table per module, so we will need to organize all methodreferences within the same module-level table.

Fluency in describing the theory and practice of compilation, in particular, the lexical analysis, syntax, and semantic analysis, code generation and optimization phases of compilation. So adding an extra parameter works, but not if we want to support use casesthat share updateable variables between functions. That is, the classes appear in order as they are declared in the file.

Another attempt could be to store, update, and access shared variables on theheap (in WASM, the linear memory). This is promising, because the memorypersists across all function calls, and indeed, in our setup, across otherboundaries like modules. Our approach will be to give special treatment andattention to variables that both updated at some point, and used withina nested function, like x in our f-g-h example above. One straightforward option, if g is not recursive, and not too large, andnot used too many times, is inlining. In many programs, nested functions aresmall helpers, and their code can be easily copied to the point where theyare called. In this case, that would mean replacing the expressions g(10)with x + 10, and g(7) with x + 7.

However, due to recursion, it is not ageneral solution, and due to code size concerns, it is not a pragmaticsolution for all cases. If we were compiling to traditional assembly, we could have the stack framefor g refer to the stack frame for f, since all stack memory in atraditional process is part of the same address space. We could compile gto do a specific memory-offset lookup for x in order to find it in itscaller’s frame, which is reminiscent the infrastructure for getting theaddress of variables in C/C++ (the & operator). These use cases help us understand some of the necessary information we needto track across REPL entries, and for separate compilation of programs thatuse classes in general. It is now our task to figure outhow to represent this in our compiler and at runtime. A single call expression in the source program may select from one ofseveral method definitions at runtime.

Acritical decision we had to make for Link is making sure that sum camebefore new, because any List-typed object that is used to call sumneeds to use the same index for that method. Running the type-checker would leave us with an expression decorated with thereturn type (in this case ), and with the obj field decorated withthe object’s class type. These first three assignments are designed to get us all to a basic level offunctionality and understanding.

Creatingreferences for variables makes yet more work at runtime, in the form ofallocations and memory access, which is less efficient than stack accessalone. An optimizing compiler for Python ought to do the analysis described above, and choose which one of the compilation strategies to use based on thecomplexity of the nested functions. The questions of when to inline, and inhow many cases we can avoid wrapping variables in references, become new, fruitful areas of measurement and exploration for the compiler author.

Students are required to extend a context-free language and design and implement a lexer and bottom-up (SLR) parser for the language in the first programming project. In the second project, students are required to extend a context-free language and design and implement a compiler using compiler construction tools such as Bison and Yacc. Midterm test has five questions, and the final examination has nine questions. I track the performance of the students on each homework assignment, each programming project assignment, and each question on the midterm and final examination.

On alarge compiler team, a single developer’s entire job might be to test outdifferent heuristics that work well for deciding which functions to inline! In this example we begin to see the true sophistication that goes into moderncompiler design. A concrete proposal for handling nested functions is to find all of thevariables that the function uses that aren’t defined within the function(and aren’t global), and add them as extra arguments. This has a nice side effect – we canmove these programs to the toplevel, because they no longer refer to anyvariables that aren’t global or their own parameters! This immediately givesus a compilation strategy for them (with a little work on naming). The students are given eleven homework assignments, two major programming projects of three weeks duration each, a midterm exam, and a final examination.

Ability to create lexical rules and grammars for a programming language. Inlining is an implementation technique that we can perform at the sourcelevel by transforming the AST directly, and the updated AST would then haveWASM code generated for it as usual.

This requires implementing a new algorithm in our compiler that calculatesthe set of nonlocal variables in a function definition. The calculation ofthis set of variables is similar to the kinds of calculations we have to doto build environments for our functions or look for undefined identifiers, but with the goal of finding names that need this extra-argument treatment. This puts a new demand on our compiler – some time before generating code, weneed to build the mapping from each class to a starting index and from eachclass-method pair to an offset. This will allow us to create this table andreference it correctly from generated code.

Acritical decision we had to make for Link is making sure that sum camebefore new, because any List-typed object that is used to call sumneeds to use the same index for that method.
